A new study published in the International Review of Economics and Finance suggests that the usual framing of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) may be too narrow. CBDCs are typically discussed as a payments story, with standard questions centering on settlement speed, privacy, monetary policy, competition among banks, and whether governments actually need a digital form of sovereign money.

According to the study, this framing may be too narrow.
