A draft proposal for Ethereum would separate two functions of consensus: selecting the chain head and finalizing blocks. Under the draft, chain-head selection is assigned to recent votes, while block finality is assigned to separate validator attestations once those attestations reach the required quorum. The proposal states that its aim is faster finality.
