For years, the search box on the Windows 11 Taskbar has had exactly one purpose: locating apps and files. Microsoft now wants it handling a dozen more jobs, and the company has announced a full overhaul of Windows Search to pull that off. Windows Insiders can already get their hands on the reworked Search, and Microsoft said every Windows 11 user will receive it in the near future. One Search Box, Thousands of Quick Actions The breadth is the real story. According to Microsoft, Windows 11 users will soon run thousands of quick actions straight from the Taskbar search — switching on Dark Mode, turning on "Do Not Disturb," or changing microphone volume — all without stepping outside the search bar. The capabilities stretch further. Through various commands, Search can toggle Bluetooth on or off, open other applications, and fire off messages via the Phone Link app. Everything Shows Up Inside Search The most intriguing change is what happens once you type. Results now surface directly within the Search interface — no separate folders, apps, or websites needed. Photos are part of that, and you can view them inside the Windows Search environment itself. Microsoft paired the update with bigger preview windows for files and said the new Search has a deeper grasp of user queries. Misspellings get a helping hand too. Improved typo tolerance means a single sloppy keystroke won't send you back to retype the entire thing. Quicker and Leaner, on Paper at Least Microsoft says the new Search is built to feel more responsive and consume less memory — two claims worth keeping an eye on. On top of the speed talk, the redesign brings a cleaner, more modern look complete with "smoother motion." Windows Insiders will find the overhaul sitting in their builds right now. Everyone else will get it soon, and the quick actions are the first thing worth trying.
